Another user with sound probs

Firstly, I must say that Barbara is doing a fantastic job at helping everyone with this problem here! Well Done, you seem to be a marval!
Now, I too have no sound on my comp! We got a virus, had to format & everything has loaded in fine, but now no sound (damn! Hubby hates me!). It lists in the sounds & audio properties of Control panel that there are no audio devices. In the Device manager, it has the big yellow ? with an ! over the bottom corner of it next to "multimedia audio controller"
Info that I got from Belarc:
System Model
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (build 2600) No details available
Processor a Main Circuit Board b
2.40 gigahertz Intel Celeron
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
128 kilobyte secondary memory cache Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P4S800MX REV 1.xx
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software, Inc. ASUS P4S800MX ACPI BIOS Revision 1008 04/30/2004

Gosh, I hope someone can help me before hubby gets home rom work!!!

First off i would like to say hi to everyone, and thanks to bookworm for all the help to everyone. As u would guess , i have the sound problem too. I installed xp pro and it says problem installing hardware intel(r)82801aa ac'97 audio controller. I open device manager under sound, video controllers it has yellow ! on the intel controller. i click it and it says code 10. ive tried to uninstall then reinstall and i get nothing. I havnt done any windows service packs ( i think ) because I bought the xp disk off this guy at my job so i dont know if it is genuine copy and i dont want microsoft hunting me down. One more small problem, i see every one posting their specs on here to get help but im still a novice at this computer thing so im not sure where to get all the info. any help is greatly appreciated

I know how dumb a$$ this is going to sound, but can someone tell me what to do with this file after downloading it?
(I have tried to install it when the pop up says hardware detected, but it searchs for the driver & cannot find it in any location on comp???? Thats what it tells me anyway!)

No such thing as a silly quesation

when u get the file downloaded...extract the files in the zip, either to a new folder on ure desktop OR keep an eye to where its extracting them to... Once extracted go through the process as before...but u should see an option for u to choose a specified location for the wizard to search for...check mark this option and point it to ure newly extracted files....

make sense?

@ Gzpimpin

looked at the driver info on some of the older OS's and it states that it uses a Cristal AC'9x driver.
http://members.driverguide.com/drive...driverid=34893
You may need to be a member to download, a generic username and password is:

user: Drivers
Passw: all

Do not know if it still works, otherwise register yourself.

But before you install the above driver download and install the intel INF-update
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...ition&lang=eng

@ Nigeytah

when u went through the process of pointing the install to the new downloaded drivers...did u see the prompt installing them?

sorry to hear ure still not sorted ...

Hi Bookworm,

I'm having the exact same problems as Night Wolfee was. I had the same info as him to start with - and was also unable to actually run the install that I downloaded - double click or right click and open - it just doesn't run. I'm going bonkers! Since his original post was some time ago - I'm hoping you might have a fix by now? Please let me know ... you can also reach me at Saughtacilly@aol.com.

Thanks so much.
