Error - Check Disk problem

Whilst on the Net a few days ago the computer froze,
then said IE (or MS) had experienced an error, then the computer shut down & restarted & asked if I wanted to send an error report & I closed the box.
Next time I started the computer it wanted to do a 'checkdisk' so I let it, but it only did the first scan of 3 & froze, so I had to reboot, ..... it does this each time I start now unless I cancel checkdisk.

The message that now pops up is:
"The file or dir. 'C:\4Mft is corrupt & unreadable' - run Chkdsk"


I wonder if someone could advise me on what to do find & fix the problem with the disk (or chkdsk),

have you tried rebooting in safe mode and running chkdsk then? it may help the freeze not to occur.

I tried your suggestion & managed to get chkdsk to scan,
it may have fixed the problem, .... I have heard it is a crucial part of the system, so may have to get it checked over by a technician,
