Need to access files under old XP

Hi, had a virus that would shut off the computer whenever the DSL MODEM was off. Also wouldn't start unless DSL MODEM was on. Tried to use the XP CD to reapair but it wouldn't do that. (Got rid of the virus in the meantime, had to use Kivorsky even though I had Panda installed.) So, since I couldn't repair XP, it installed XP again, resulting in two XPs. When the computer comes on, it asks which XP to use. Trying the old one give me the error "WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM missing or corrupt". I've reloaded MONEY but can't access the old files from the new XP. I realize I may have written over old files. Also can't access any photos and many other files. When I do a virus scan there are more than twice the files on the original XP. If anyone has had this problem or can solve it I would be truely grateful.
