Need to Clean Up the PC - sloooooowww

First off, I have read TONS of threads here on this and similar topics, some are a bit outdated now.
Here are my 2 issues:
1) Homebuilt PC, I have been changing out hardware on this thing over the past 3-4 years and now I think the only original thing left is a fan Anyway, I would like to clean her up and speed her up. My poor original hard-drive is so cluttered with years of adding and removing programs, I would like to clean it up without having to reformat and reinstall everything (I could do this, but then I would have to reload all my favorite programs)
What is the best overall program to check how well everything is working and get it tuned to run optimally and clear out the garbage? Norton System Utilities?
The only program I run now is Ad-Aware.
2) Laptop, same problems, running sluggish, video gets sticky, also just running Ad-Aware.

I know this is an old topic for you pros, but I would love to hear a current discourse on what you would suggest, willing to buy program if needed.

Jeez that is alot of information, and some of those programs he uses expect you to have some deeper knowledge of programming and your system dynamics.
Anything that is a little more user friendly for non-programmers (ie non-compgeeks) ?

Of course we have some things for you to do...

First:
1. Empty your Temp(s) Folder, turn off System restore, Clean your prefetch Folder, Uninstall any unused program, go to c:/Windows/Program Files and search for Folder that you are not using anymore and had been left behind for programs already uninstalled in your sistem,,, If you are using XP SP2 for a long time without problems then you can try deleting your $NnInstall Hiden Folders in c:/Windows (the only problem is that you are not gonna be able to uninstall SP2 from your Computer anymore,,, and """defragment your HDD"""... finally click on start/run and then type "defrag c: -b" without the ""
2. run a scandisk to know about your HDD Helth... if everything goes well then the next step is cleaning the registry either MANUAL or using a program...
3. Tweaking your sistem to gain performance is a very useful tool too... I have many things that could help you to do so... very easy tricks!!!.... WE WILL GO OVER THAT LATER...

turn off System restore

Clean your prefetch Folder

This is to yoni5002

I did the "finally click on start/run and then type "defrag c: -b" without the "" . It showed a command prompt and held there for couple seconds. I'm assuming its cleaning System32. But just to be sure, what did it do?

OK, I did some searches and found that information and did the following:

1) deleted out Temp Folder contents
2) Turned off system restore
3) cleared out my prefetch folder (of 101 items)

XP SP2 just got reinstalled, so i may not want to remove the $Nninstall quite yet.
Getting ready to run scandisk and defrag.

I tried again to connect and disconnect and reconnect my 2nd 100GB HDD, still no luck getting the system to recognize.
I know the jumpers and cables are correct because it was working fine before I deleted the second WinXP install.....

What this does is getting together the files that windows uses to boot up and then IT moves it to the faster reading HDD sectors (lead out)for the fastest start up!!

It is recomended to delete everything inside the Prefetch Folder located in X:/ Windows before doing the "defrag c: -b"...But do NOT erase the Folder itself!!!

Ok you said you have installed a lot of programs all through this years in your sistem... We need to make sure that everything is ok... If you have a Windows XP CD this is what I want you to do:

First Download Ccleaner (free 100%) at :
http://www.Ccleaner.com
Install it and run a Scan for Issues

Then I'm really gonna need you to do this:
insert your XP CD in the CD Drive,
Click on Start/Run and Type this "sfc /scannow " without the "
This is gonna check your installation of Windows XP without earising anything and without reinstallation... It is just gonna check for bad files in the windows Sistem!!! and repair them if there is any!!!
Go Go Go we are half of the way already

Prepare Yourself

If you are done with everything i told you to do... THIS IS THE SOCKING DIFERENCE IN YOUR SISTEM PERFORMANCE

Remove the Shared Documents folders from My Computer

Simply fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ My Computer \ NameSpace \ DelegateFolders

You'll see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. If you delete this, all of the Shared Documents folders (which are normally under the group called "Other Files Stored on This Computer") will be gone.

You do not need to reboot your system to see the change
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Use the ultimate configuration tool (Professional Edition only)

One of the most full featured Windows XP configuration tools available is hidden right there in your system, but most people don't even know it exists. It's called the Local Group Policy Editor, or gpedit for short. To invoke this editor, select Start and then Run, then type the following:

gpedit.msc

After you hit ENTER, you'll be greeted by gpedit, which lets you modify virtually every feature in Windows XP without having to resort to regedit. Dig around and enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Speed up the Start Menu

The default speed of the Start Menu is pretty slow, but you can fix that by editing a Registry Key. Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay

By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up.

If this doesn't work for some reason, then you might try the following: Navigate to Display Properties then Appearance then Effects and turn off the option titled Show menu shadow. You will get much better overall performance.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enable ClearType on the Welcome Screen!

Fire up the Registry Editor and look for the following keys:

(default user) HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ FontSmoothing (String Value)
HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ FontSmoothingType (Hexadecimal DWORD Value)

Make sure both of these values are set to 2 and you'll have ClearType enabled on the Welcome screen and on each new user by default.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Display Hibernate Option on the Shut Down dialog

For some reason, Hibernate isn't available from the default Shut Down dialog. But you can enable it simply enough, by holding down the SHIFT key while the dialog is visible. Now you see it, now you don't!

Why this isn't just there by default is unknown.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This tweak removes the shortcut arrow

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Shell Icons

Backup the key.
In the right-pane, create a new String value named "29"
Double-click 29 and set it's value as follows:
C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,50 (an empty icon)

Close Registry Editor. Restart the computer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disable Disk Performance Counters Levels 3 & 4 only
Press the Windows + R keys > type diskperf -n > reboot
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tweak #3 - Shutdown on speed

By altering a few registry settings, you can dramatically decrease the amount of time it takes for Windows to shut down. To do this, first open up the registry editor and navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\

Once there, find the value HungAppTimeout and make sure it is set to 5000 (that's the default). Now, in the same folder, look for the value WaitToKillAppTimeout. Set this to 4000 (the default is 20000).

Lastly, navigate to the folder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\

and change the value WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 4000 as well.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Add a My Computer or My Network Places toolbar.

Click on My Computer and hold, slide it to the edge of the screen (any edge) and you have a My Computer tool bar. Works with My Network Places too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disable User Tracking Levels 3 & 4 only
"A value of 1 prevents the system from tracking the programs users run, the paths they navigate, and the documents they open. The system uses this information to customize Windows features. As a result, the system disables customized menus and other features that require user tracking information." (from this page)

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoInstrumentation"=dword:00000001
------------------------------------------------------------------------
*************Using X-Setup 6.6*************************

X-setup is an especially powerful program which I encourage you to explore. One word of caution. When choosing some options in X-Setup you may get a warning message that basically states that messing with these settings can hose your system. Pay attention to these warnings!
After you launch X-Setup, choose "Classic" under "start options"
Performance
Speed Up Windows Explorer and desktop screen refresh. *All Levels

All X-Setup Plug-ins > Appearance > Explorer > Settings > Explorer Options > check box that says Enable fast update and apply changes. Be sure to uncheck the other 2 options if you do not want to use them.

Stop Windows from looking for Scheduled Tasks when browsing network *All Levels

All X-Setup Plug-ins > Network > Explorer > Remote Computers Special Folders > uncheck "Show Scheduled Tasks" when viewing network computers. If you don't have a shared network printer then uncheck the other box too. Apply changes.

Disable 8.3 Name Creation Levels 3 & 4 only

All X-Setup Plug-ins > System > File System > Windows NT/2K/XP Options > Windows File System Options > uncheck Create 8+3 filenames (NTFS partitions only)

This tweak may cause errors with an occasional program including the installation (not the running of) Norton products.

Disable NTFS Time Stamp Levels 3 & 4 only

All X-Setup Plug-ins > System > File System > Windows NT/2K/XP Options > Windows File System Options > uncheck Enable update of "Last Access" attribute.

From MS "Warning: Some applications such as incremental backup utilities rely on this update information and cease to function properly without it."

Disable Thumbnail Cache Levels 3 & 4 only

This stops the creation of that annoying little Thumbs.db file. If you go into folders containing pics often you may not want to use this tweak.

All X-Setup Plug-ins > Appearance > Explorer > Settings > Thumbnails Enabled > uncheck Enable creating thumbnails and apply changes.

note - the purpose of this tweak is (still) mislabeled in X-Setup. This does NOT disable the creation of thumbnails. This tweak disables the creation of a thumbnail cache (thumbs.db). Using this tweak will slow the viewing of thumbnails a tad. The advantage is that the thumbnails will always reflect the current version of the pics and you won't have thumbs.db files all over your hard drives.

Add a "Start program in High Priority" to context menu for .EXE files Levels 3 & 4 only

All X-Setup Plug-ins > System > Advanced Performance Settings > Start High Priority Context Menu > check Enable command on context menu for EXE files and apply changes.

Automatically Restart Explorer After Crash *All Levels

All X-Setup Plug-ins > System > Crash Control > Crash Control Options #1 > check Automatically restart Explorer after crash and apply changes.

Make Internet Explorer Behave Levels 3 & 4 only

All X-Setup Plug-ins > Internet > Internet Explorer > System > Advanced Options #1 > uncheck “Check for Updates on microsoft.com” and “Enable Error Reporting” and apply changes. (Don’t forget to run Windows Update!)

While still under the System key, go down and click on the key labeled “Persistent Caching” check Disable IE Persistent Caching and apply changes. (I DO NOT recommend this for folks using dialup)

Functionality and Other Good Stuff

Make the “Find Files” Interface Cleaner and TURN THAT DAMN DOG OFF! Levels 3 & 4 only

All X-Setup Plug-ins > Appearance > System > Find Files Dialog > Find Files Dialog Appearance, uncheck the box and apply changes. (Thanks to Theo for suggesting this tip)

Add NTFS Encrypt/Decrypt Context menu *All Levels

All X-Setup Plug-ins > Appearance > Files&Folders > Folders Context menu > Encrypt/Decrypt Context menu > check box on right and apply changes.

Show hidden devices in device manager *All Levels

All X-Setup Plug-ins > Hardware > System Settings > Windows Phantom Devices > check the box on the right and apply changes.

THIS SHOLD SPEED UP YOUR COMPUTER... ALso:

If you have enough RAM (256 MB) or more... I personally reccomend (512 MB)
you can disable the paging File to speed up your Computer... This makes windows Blaze if you have it optimized... I have worked without paging files for a long time having excellent results... There is a lot od discusion about this but you can try it yourself and have your own opinion,,, I personally Do recomend it!!!

Let me Know when Done with all this and also if you have seen the diference with your own eyes!!!!

Why Yoni, thanks for the great information, I have not been available to do these things yet and will try this weekend, THANKS!!
I think running that windows xp check is exactly what I am looking for, I will try it.
I tried again to get my 2nd HDD connected, funny thing is it seems to work on my first boot up, and then it doesn't work on a second boot, in fact, it won't recognize either drive and then loses the ability to recognize my USB mouse or serial port keyboard.
Then when I disconnect the 2nd drive it seems to recognize the master again...
I will have to play with that again this weekend.
