Screensaver freezes

I have Windows XP and SP2.
I use the Windows screensaver.
I have it set for 1 minute, with a password protect.
After one minute, the icons disappear and the background is left showing, frozen, The computer does not flip to the screensaver.
With no icons showing, I have to.. control+alt+ delete... once to get back to the password window.
I have tried all different screensavers with the same result.
Of course, every once in awhile, the screensaver works OK, and then the next time, it freezes...It's driving me nuts.
I need BOTH the password protect, and the screensaver, because my computer is right in the middle of my store, and if I leave my machine, I know it will be safe from strangers looking at it.
Any ideas how to fix this frozen screensaver problem?

Hiya N&M,
I would first try running windows update and getting all updates done.
Next update/reinstall all your drivers for video card drivers, motherboard drivers, sound drivers, and what ever else you got.
next update/reinstall directx.

The idea here is replacing most of these files that may have a issue. 8 out of 10 times after completing all this stability problems dissapear.
