editing desktop shortcut labels failed

It's normally easy to change the text labels under the shortcut icons on the XP desktop. For unknown reasons this stopped being possible on my PC - they cannot be edited directly - the usual rename box appears but typing or deleting has no effect - nor can they be edited during creation of the shortcut. Any ideas?

more on this

I now see that I cannot edit the field content in any form - for example, loading software, if I try to enter or change company name - neither is possible.
