icons not showing

Okay, I just reformatted my computer because i had a bunch of useless crap on it and i didn't feel like cleaning it so I just saved what i needed and reformattted. When I finished reformatting, everything was fine and worked great, I installed one of the updates, restarted my computer, and whoa, my desktop still had the background but no icons were there, and when i go to make like a box with the mouse on the background i just get a O with a line through it.

When I go to my desktop through documents and settings I see all my shortcuts, but its not on my main desktop, and also when I right click the desktop and go to Arrange Icons, all the options are faded and I can't click any of them. Can someone please help?

ctrl alt delte new task "explorer" maybe it wasnt running

If you can get to my computer then explorer is running. There are many common problems with the latest release of directx 9c.
I have a post on how to revert back to the original version from your xp cd. You can try this and see if it works for you. Be sure to follow the steps all the way through.
