Media Player 10 will not Maxamize

I have XP with service pack 2 installed. I attempted to install Media Player 9, but XP wouldn't allow the installation. The player somewhat plays in toolbar mode, but it will not maximize at all. I get this message when opening MP from C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

"The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 9.0.0.3250 where 10.0.0.3802 was expected. Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled."

I've repeatedly reinstalled Media Player 10 but it never fixes the problem. XP isn't allowing a Roll Back either. How do I get all the file versions to match????

If it was working previously you could try a system restore to an earlier date
