Windows freezes during startup. HELP!!!!

All of a sudden, when I power up my computer (XP), I get the XP logo page, then the blue page for a password, my wallpaper appears...but the machine just freezes. Nothing else loads, nothing works, nothing. I have to push the power button and hold it to kill the machine.....restart...then it usually starts ok, but slowly.

PLEASE HELP!!! What could the problem(s) be? I have Norton Internet Security, so I doubt its a virus. HELP!!

You need to reinstall Windows. This is not a virus problem but is caused by not switching the pc off correctly and corrupting files. You will need a windows disk or the original setup cdrom. You can overwrite the existing partition and retain (usually, although I have experienced it not being retained) your my documents folder, or you can wipe the partition and reinstall everything from scratch.

If you are using a shared machine, be aware that retaining data means that all accounts' my documents will be retained and accessible regardless of whether or not you had passwords on said accounts.

That means I'll lose all my files though...right?? Crap. guess I could get an external hard drive, move everything, do it, then move it all back.

Right SP100, also I would recommend to prevent Norton from Start up and ShutDown Norton Services to see what happens, I have adviced many times about a problem with norton and Windows Firewall that may apply here too... the reason why that computer is crashing could be relationated with the drivers norton loads up and a Windows XP automatic actualization...
I think you should concider this before doing a new installation and:
if you are able to fire up the Task Manager after your system crashes you can then just logg off and logg back on and you will be able to work as usually.
