Unhappy XP Home addition won't boot

I was out of town and I came back home and my computer had frooze. I had to do a hard reboot and the system ran real slow. I rebooted in Safe Mode and everything worked okay. I tried to troubleshoot and it finally got to the point where the system won't even go into safe mode. While I was able to boot, I would get errors like system32.dll corrupt, etc. I changed my BIOS to boot from the CD and I booted with the Windows XP recovery disk. I ran chkdsk /r since windows said to run this on the blue screen while trying to boot. I then rebooted and then I get an error stop:0x0A. I then re-ran the Windows recovery and tried to view the contents of the C drive and I get an error that says the disk can't be accessed due to an enumeration error. I'm thinking I'm geting a NFS.sys error but I don't know how to solve it and the Windows recovery isn't worth a hoot on explaining how to fix problems. Any suggestions? I figure I could re-install Windows XP but I figure I'd loose the hard drive contents.
