view of sub folder question in xp

I have run into a problem in xp I don't know how to fix so hopefully someone here knows the answer...problem is for example if I open my documents folder no problem I see all files and sub folders but if I go and double click on any sub folder it open up into the search window and the only way to open up any sub folder is to right click and go to open then the folder opens ok, this problem is happening with all sub folders anywhere. Does anyone have a fix to stop the search from opening and just the sub folder opening to its content, I have tried everything I know and I am starting to get a wee bit frustrated! any help would be appreciated.
