URGENT: Need Assistance

I recently upgraded from windows 2000 to xp professional using the upgrade option in setup. It started up fine the first time, but now there's no Start menu and in the task manager there aren't any user names listed beside the running processes. There's no internet connection active on the machine (using a laptop to post this) so I don't think it's a virus or piece of malware. Norton Antivirus is active on the machine and the virus definitions are up to date.

Where did I go wrong??

The upgrade process can be hit and miss. Try a repair install. If that dosn't do it, a clean install may be needed.

can i initiate a repair install from the recovery console? if so, how?

You do NOT want the recovery console.

You should get a repair option when you boot up from the cd.

whatever you decide to go on with, a repair or something else, make sure to turn off your antivirus program and all aplications runing in the background, programs runing during upgrades and or repairs could cause the system to crash!!! be aware of this for your next step!!!
