Can't open folder

Over time I have put about 4,000 music files in a folder I've labeled My Music. The folder is on my external hard drive (NTFS). When I double click on the folder nothing happens; it will not open. Using Ctrl/Alt/Del I get the messasge "not responding" (Drive F). For many months everything worked perfectly; I was able to open the folder. But for the last week or two I cannot. All other folders on that drive are accessible. How can I view and retrieve my music files? They do show up when I open my media player, by the way, so they are still on my computer, but they are not accessible via the folder on my external drive.
