I need help restoring my sound!!!

After installing an update using windows xp homeedition online i noticed that my sound stopped working on my system. I read through all of the previous threads posted by people having the same problem and still can't seem to correct the problem. Here is my system information that I got from running a "Belarc scan on my computer":

Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (build 2600)

System Model: Compaq Presario 06 DC477A-ABA S3100NX NA110 0n41411RE101SALSA
System Serial Number: MX312B3156
Enclosure Type: Desktop

Processor: 1.80 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP

Multimedia and sound: Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)

Also under "device manager" "sound, controllers, video": Vinly AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM), Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Media Control Device, Legacy video Capture Devices, Video Codecs

Can anyone help me get my sound working again???
Thanks,
uptownnola

Have you tried Start/Run/dxdiag and then step thru the various sound system tests? It may help to pinpoint the problem.
Good luck!

Download the driver and choose Save to disc, then browse to where you want to save, My Documents is a good place, you can create a folder first within My Documents and name it Downloads, then make a note of the File name, or change it to Sound driver, once downloaded you just double click to install, it will install automatically.

Set a System Restore Point just in case

Can you walk me through downloading the driver from the website? I don't want to download anything I don't need?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

The file you want is listed as Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000?XP/2003(32/64) it is Version A3.78 - choose any of the 3 download sites and click GO.
The File Download - Security Warning dialogue box will appear. Do you want to run or save this file showing VXD_378.exe - choose Save - the Save As dialogue box will appear choose a location from the dropdown list, the Desktop is the easiest to find. When the download is complete just double click the file and it will install itself.

Don't forget to set a Restore point just in case

Hope this helps

the video and part of sound are intergrated in the chipset, these are Compacs original drivers for your model.
Set a System Restore Point before installation of each driver just in case

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...dlc=en&lang=en

Download Via/S3 ProSavage DDR driver update ( Sp23964.exe) this is the Via 4 in 1 chipset driver. Save to where you can find and double click to install.
Restart your comp.Choose Download file(s) to install later - not Download now.

Go here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...dlc=en&lang=en

download and install the Realtek sound driver, again save where you can find and double click to install.Choose Download file(s) to install later - not Download now.

Hope this helps
