Mouse pointer problem

Can anyone tell me why when playing a game the "mouse arrow" has vertical lines following it when I move the mouse? It occurs when I move the mouse horizontically or vertically and the pointer flickers. It does not occur when I am at desktop, only when I am playing a game. I have the most current driver for the Basic Optical Mouse I am using. Thank you.
