Angry Removing annoying security features from SP2 - ARGH how annoying!

I recently bought a new laptop which came with XP home SP2 installed on it. I have XP pro on all my other pcs but only with SP1 installed.

I hate all the new security features that take over in SP2 like the annoying boxes which pop up when you try to run downloaded files and the file extension blocking in msn and outlook.

I have tried everything I can think of to disable these features but I cant seem to find a way. The most annoying thing is the file extension blocking in msn messenger which deletes any files i receive with extensions it doesnt like.

I have switched off all the options in the security centre (as i use 3rd party firewalls etc) and stopped the security centre and firewall services from loading. Is there a way to remove all the annoying prompts and warnings which are associated with downloaded files?

I hate it when windows treats a fairly experienced user who can work out if a file is safe or not like a novice. Its like SP2 thinks it knows best.

I would reformat with XP pro SP1 or home SP1 but I dont have a legal cd key for them and i've already had to reformat once to remove all the crap dell installed on my machine.

Theres probably just a little check box somewhere "stop all the annoying stuff from happening" but i've not found it yet.

Please let me know what you guys have done as im sure im not the only one who finds this annoying. Many thanks indeed.

Hi,

Open Note Pad and copy/paste the following (including "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"):

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download]
"CheckExeSignatures"="no"
"RunInvalidSignatures"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Attachments]
"SaveZoneInformation"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Associations]
"LowRiskFileTypes"=".zip;.rar;.nfo;.txt;.exe;.bat; .com;.cmd;.reg;.msi;.htm;.html;.gif;.bmp;.jpg;.avi ;.mpg;.mpeg;.mov;.mp3;.m3u;.wav;"

There should be NO space in "CurrentVersion" or "mp3". Thats just a copy/paste error that I've never been able to figure out.
Save it with these properties:
file name: dl.reg
Save as type: All files
Encoding: ANSI

Now double-click on the file you just made and merge it with your registry. You may want to make a restore point before trying this.

that has helped - it doesnt ask me about downloaded files anymore but i still cant send/receive "dangerous" files over msn (7.5)

i should really use Trillian or Gaim or something i think.

Compress files with winrar before you send them. That always works for me.

http://downloads.mess.be/downloads/m...w.mess.be).zip

removes the file sharing limitation and also adverts/logos and other useless rubbish from msn. i can reccomend it - works great and makes life so simple.

Sounds good. Could you report back after a week or so usage. I'd like to know of any bugs you might find.

Send a message via MSN to sourcez
Mess.be must be one of the most useful microsoft based sites around (simply because it undoes everything MSN produces)

Thanks for posting the link, has proved most useful, although does anybody ever have problems with 100% CPU caused by MSN Messenger - even when it's inactive?

Thanks

How do you know the file is safe before you get it???

Presumably you guys fixed the problem settings in internet options too? Otherwise, you won't know what's coming behind your back, will you?

a bit of common sense and you can easily flag a dangerous file which maybe needs more caution (most of the time hehe). certainly with messenger, just don't accept stuff from random people. no one should really have to send you an exe anyway - just ask for a download link to the original file.

and messenger takes it one step further by BLOCKING files rather than just warning! why block mp3's for instance - their not even executable! how can that pose a danger? its just microsoft siding with the mpaa/riaa boys and trying to force its drm on us. i bet wma/wmv isnt blacklisted!

and as for internet downloads, any site covered in adverts, popups and refrences to warez needs caution in my eyes you can usually tell from the site content the sites purpose, be it delivering a reputable product or deceiving the less aware. most stuff i download is either from a large companies official website or sourceforge which i trust in both cases.

i can see how it adds another (in windows' case much needed) layer of defence and makes users think about what they have downloaded although to be honest my bets are most people get so sick of seeing the warnings they just blindly click past them.

your best bet is some decent anti-virus software, a firewall, the latest security patches, backups and common sense; not patronising and annoying users with warnings and restrictions. the thing that bugs me most is the way it interrupts your work flow and makes even mundane tasks slow.

that is windows as a whole... and it only gets worse with vista. i have been using it through my uni since early beta stages and the interface while flash and sleek is cluttered, disorganised and invasive. thats another storey though

i would also like to say that i have not had a virus on any of my computers (2 desktops and a laptop) in several years despite heavy internet use on many networks. i have had a fair few drive failures, corrupt registries and random crashes but never any data loss from a virus.

besides i'm now using Linux 99.8% of the time and it does everything i require with minimal fuss (once its setup at least, which can sometimes be a fuss ). no limits imposed on you there, it does what you tell it to do. plus the ability to combine simple commands with pipes and write simple scripts makes basic and repetitive administration tasks a doddle. another major plus for me is i've learnt more about my computer using linux for 1.5years than i have in 10years under windows
