Start menu disappears after about a second
Hi,
I've been having a really annoying problem with one of my XP machines and I just can't work out what is causing it.
Usually when it first boots up all is fine, but after what seems to be a random amount of time I start to get a couple of issues that seem releated.
Firstly when I go to the start menu it pops up, but will always dissapear within about 1 second or less of it coming up, making it nearly impossible to choose anything off the menu.
At the same time, if I've got a program running in full screen mode (It's an MCE box, so for example the Media Center interface) the taskbar will just pop up, taking the machine out of full screen mode.
Firstly I expected it to be a virus or malware, but I've tried adaware etc and anti virus software but they haven't found anything.
I've tried changing the registry so program's can't steal focus, but that didn't do anything. In MCE I've chosen 'always on top' but it still happens.
I've tried using msconfig to restrict as much as possible from starting up, but it still happens.
It's really strange because if I'm running in windowed mode, it's not like the focus is taken out of the application every second, it's only the start menu that doesn't seem to be able to keep focus.
If this makes any difference, when trying to use the start menu it's as if there's something running that moves the focus every second, so depending on when you try to click the start menu, sometimes you get a second to pick something, othertimes it'll only pop up for 1/10th second etc.
It's driving me nuts, I've previously kept having to do a powerquest drive image restore to fix the issue, but recently I updated my image and then realised that the image file now also has this issue.
Help.
Cheers
Andrew
