ISSUES Networking XP to 98 2nd ED

I currnetly have 4 XP Professional systems on a home network and now am trying to add another system running windows 98 2nd Edition to the network.

The machine using 98 has a linksys wireless network card in it and intermittently allows access to the shared drives. It will bring 2 of them up but will not allow access to them.

I had no problems whatsoever with it using the internet until I started trying to get the machine networked.

I used the netsetup.exe file which windows XP puts on a floppy while installing the rest of the network.

I have had no luck as of yet to get this system on the network and have now temporarily lost even the internet connection, although my linksys utility says that I am connected to the router..........

ANY IDEAS\HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!

Any good informative web pages describing how to correctly network 98 to XP would also be appreciated.

Okay I just got my internet back on the Win98 machine after running the netsetup tool again.

So here is the problem now........

ALL OTHER COMPUTERS can "SEE" the Win98 machine.

The Win98 Machine CANNOT "SEE" ANY OTHER MACHINES except itself.

??????????????????????????????????????

Say you had a user "bob" with password "evil" on your Win98 machine using MicrosoftNetworking. Try creating a same credentialled non-guest user on WinXP machine2 and try seeing machine2 from your Win98 machine.

I spent a few hours last night searching the net and it seems as though this is a VERY VERY common problem people have been having.

MY SOLUTION:

Install the NETBEUI protocol on the Windows XP machines. Problem Solved.

Unfortunately Microsoft no longer supports that protocol so you have to manually copy the netnbf.ini and nbf.sys files from the XP disk into the appropriate directories and THEN install them.

After that no hitches........
