Registry Cleaners

XPpro/SP2/IE7

Installed and ran Registry Mechanic 7 and subsequently found that neither Standby or Hibernate were functioning properly. Tried System Restore but that failed. Spent ages trying to get information from Microsoft and they could not assist.

1. I need a regitry cleaner because I want to remove Comodo 3 firewall
which leaves about 20 invalid registry keys and whose originator does
not yet have a clean-up tool

2. Does anyone know of a registry tool that does not have the effect as
described above?

It's very common for firewall and antivirus software to leave behind invalid registry entries upon uninstall. By their nature, they set numerous "hooks" into the system. You may well understand that for the writers of such software (particularly if free), writing a clean tool is low priority. Norton only did so in response to numerous complaints.

I'm not aware of any registry cleaner that will really do the trick. You could manually edit the registry, but that is hazardous if you aren't sure what you're doing. It is also, IMO, unnecessary. My wife's comp has remnants of Kerio and Outpost firewalls, also Comodo antivirus (been meaning to do a clean install). They are all disabled.

Here's what you can do:

1) Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Maximize the window. Look for any entry that has "Comodo" in the title. Right click -> Properties -> Startup Type. Change to "Disabled". Close.

2) Go to Start -> Run. Type in the window "msconfig" without the quotes. Under the Startup Tab, uncheck anything that says "Comodo". Reboot.

3) Run system file checker. Start -> Run -> "sfc /scannow", without the quotes and with a space after sfc. You may be prompted to insert your install disc in the optical drive. More about system file checker here:

The only registry cleaner I use (occasionally) Is CCleaner, free. I don't see the connection between your registry cleaner and standby problems, but perhaps someone else can advise. I'd be more likely to think some Comodo service is doing it. Disabling such services and running system file checker *MAY* (crossing fingers) fix the problem. Please post back on your success or lack thereof.

Good luck.

You could try Registry Seeker (free software):

Download and extract Registry Seeker 1.55 (439kb) http://fileforum.betanews.com/downlo...r/1035382760/1.

Run the file 'RegSeeker.exe' and select 'Clean the Registry'.

Select any keys and select 'Auto Clean'.

Now select which types of file to Auto Clean and click 'GO!'.

After registry clean, click OK and close the program.

Power saving problem could be a driver, or the HAL type is incorrect. I doubt it is Comodo's fault.
Despite being free, Comodo have a respectable portfolio of tools.
Keys left behind is something pretty much all progs do.
20 keys is peanuts compared to something like Incredimail, that leaves close on 2000 duff keys and numerous files behind.

Crapcleaner is one I use myself. I also still use an old version of JVtools.

Now that you mention it, I seem to recall that the hibernate option in power saving in XP can be problematic. Mine's turned off and whenever I do an install, I make sure it's turned off without even thinking about it any more.

IIRC, power saving is handled through the ACPI, which is implemented by the BIOS and chipset device drivers. You could try updating the BIOS and all device drivers while you're at it, along with all patches and updates. Or just turn the damn thing (hibernate) off.
