windows explorer shuts down

I have a minor problem but it happends quite often which is annoying. Basically I have a pentium 3 512 Ram 800Mhz
I have two separate drives. C: and D:
Windows is installed on C:
and D: drive is just for music, films.
Whenever I open up my music file in the D: drive, windows explorer shuts down and reappears with all the other programs running fine but the Music file has closed. That's it, that is the problem??????

To try the easiest thing first, shut down the Indexing service...which can sometimes cause the problem you're having accessing a folder with a lot of relatively large files in it.

To shut down Indexing, go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services, scroll down to and double click on Indexing Service. Set it to "Disabled" in "Startup type" and click on the 'Stop" button to stop it without have to reboot. Click OK.

Try accessing the music folder again and see if that clears up the problem.

I turn off the Indexing Service on all the XP systems I maintain and have never encountered a problem with it.

I am also having a similar problem, except I would add that it results in Windows itself freezing (for varied amounts of time) until the process associated with the open folder is closed. Windows then appears to rearrange the programs on the task bar. I've went into "services" and set "indexing" from "manual" to "disable" - my question is, if the service isn't "started" and is in "manual" is it still making the service available? ... did this resolution solve the previous problem?

I'm continuing to toy with my machine to see if it fails again.

Thanks,

op.

The problem is with your codecs. I installed the free codec pack called 'SLD codec pack' and this fixed the problem forever.

hope it works and let me know ok.
