Have problem with task bar notification area
I had a problem with my wireless network which was solved by a comcast tech. However, after he was done solving that problem several of the icons on my laptop no longer show in the task bar notification area. I'm trying to figure out how to get the "past items" such as the volume control and battery meter to show but have not had any success. Anyone have a suggestion or answer to this problem.

Open Control Panel/ Sound Devices and check the box "Place Volume icon in the taskbar"...
Refresh the icon cache by deleting the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data). It will be automatically recreated.

Ok, I was able to get the volume control back, however, it came back without doing anything, but I did go to the control panel to see whether the box "place volume icon in the taskbar" and indeed the box was checked. Any suggestions on how to get the battery meter back. Some of the other icons did come back when I restarted, but not the battery meter

To try the easiest thing first, right click on an empty space on the Taskbar, left click on Properties, click on the Customize button.
Scroll to the icons you want to be visible. Click on it to select it and a drop-down list will appear to its right. Choose "Always show" (or whatever option you want). When you've got all the changes made you want, click OK and OK again.

Ok, You go t your icons back now.... You still need the battery icon though... Open the Control Panel/ Power Options/ (Advanved Tab)---> Make sure to check the box: "Always show icons in the Taskbar"... IF IS CHECKED ALREADY, THEN UNCHECK IT AND CHECK IT BACK AGAIN... THAT SHOULD SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM WITH THAT ICON....

Yoni5002 Strange thing happened...after the icons that were previously on the task bar appeared for just one time, they disappeared again and stayed lost for the next few times I turned the compter on and off. Now today, they all appeared again, even though I had previously selected "Always show on the taskbar for all the ones I wanted. I tried the control panel route for the power options and the advanced tab showed the "alway show" box was checked, but I did as you suggested deselecting and reselecting it, then checked "apply" and Voila! I'm back in business. Thanks for help and look for a consultant fee in the mail!

Thanks for the advice. I was accessing it by right clicking on an empty space on the start menu, a bit of a round about way to get to the same place. Problems with the task bar now seem to be history. It all works by magic anyway doesn't it?
