Re-booted computer lost my pictures and documents

Hi all,
I have been having alot of problems lately with my computer, I was in the middle of a system restore when we had a power cut, when I returned all of my hard drive had gone and I had to re-install everything. I run Windows XP Home Edition and have realised that my documents folder and my pictures folder is empty, I had over 2,000 photos and files and would love to get them back, I am sure there is a way I am so gutted I lost them, any help or advice?

If you didn't format the harddrive, the files might still be there.

Boot into Safe Mode (repeatedly press and release the F8 key when the computer starts bootin up, choose Safe Mode from the boot menu) and use the Administrator account. This account is only accessible in XP Home in Safe Mode.

The Administrator account will be able to access all files on the drive so if your missing files are there, you will be able to find them in the Administrator account and move them into your user account's My Documents folder.
