Apple provided this solution
I had the same problem, where iTunes simply would not open. he taskmanager showed it as running, but nothing would happen.
According to the troubleshooting section of the Apple website (and this fixed the itunes 6.0, I am not sure about previous versions) it was necessary to run LiveUpdate for Norton Internet Security. As soon as i ran the update, I was prompted to restart, and after it restarted, itunes worked perfectly with no additional steps required.
I hope this helps, it was an irritating and maddening problem.

Violet, what is the URL of the Apple page that helped.
I have tried everything on this to fix it, and it isn't working! I have Win XP Pro, iTunes 6, 1GB RAM, 2Ghz P4. I've tried reinstalling iTunes, fixing it, deleting preference files, etc. etc. and nothing works.

I Have The Answer!!!!
I HAVE THE ANSWER!!! Finally I tried something and it worked perfectly. All of you pay attention to the following:
1. Go to Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> iTunes --> Remove
...uninstall the program completely and restart your computer
2. Go to Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> QuickTime --> Remove
...uninstall the program completely and restart your computer
3. Go to My Computer --> Local Disc --> Program Files. Once in Program Files you will see the iTunes and QuickTime folder and you will want to delete the iTunes folder and the QuickTime folder. Right click on the iTunes folder and select delete and confirm the deletion. Do the same for QuickTime.
4. Restart your computer
5. Disable all features of any anti-virus program such as Norton or McAfee
6. Open Internet Explorer or which ever internet program you use and go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download the iTunes+QuickTime program. *Do not do any modifications in the download of the program.* Just download the program by doing the usual "Next" clicking.
7. Once iTunes is finished downloading, double click on the Shortcut Icon on the desktop. iTunes should open with a large square box and you have to click "Agree."
8. iTunes WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now you can enable your anti-virus program and there will no longer be any issues.
Very welcome to all of you. This is very easy and will guaranteed work. I'm a computer pro and I have had to do this for a lot of people. It works for everyone.

This works like a charm! :-)
If you get an error message, like to send to microsoft, this is for you.I tryed everything, but I saw amazed that this actually works!
For a start, delete ALL i-tunes stuff. (you'll loose your playlists but you can always make new ones!), then go to: http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=quicktime
Download an old version of quicktime (try 6.4) and then use the uninstall option to uninstall it, it will ask you if you want to uninstall everything, you do! Then just download i-tunes again!
I actually jumped for joy!
Hope this helps

That won't work because the new iTunes (6.0.2) requires a QuickTime version of 7.0.3 or newer.

iTunes won't open and XP hangs
I updated to iTunes 6.0.2 now it won't open and have tryed all the suggestions listed. The one difference I experience is that after I try to open iTunes I can't shut down. I have to power my system off.
Do you have any other suggestions I could try?

Itunes has encountered a problem
I tried the "I HAVE THE ANSWER!!! which was "guaranteed to work" and am still having the same problem.
Itunes works fine unless I have IPOD connected to it. But once IPOD is connected.....as soon as it tries to update, I get the "Itunes has encountered a problem".
I have a work around which is to copy my ITUNES library folders and the library xml folder to another PC that I have in my home office network, and it works fine.
Its a shame that I have to go through this extra step.
If anyone figures out why its crashing on my PC running XL, would love to hear other solutions.
By the way, I am not running any anti-virus softwares at the moment. I uninstalled Norton when this probelm first surfaced.

No iTunes, No shutdown
I've got the same problem as Roll, Itunes won't do ANYTHING when i try to run it, and then when I try to restart or shut down the computer it hangs. I haven't tried anything other than a simple uninstall and reinstall, but I will when i get home tonight. This is very annoying because i just bought my Nano today, and now i can't even use the thing!!

The Solution For I-tunes Is Stubborn Files!
When i updated I-tunes, it crashed along with Quicktime, same as everyone else here. Since the symptoms appear to be identical for eveyone here, it sounds like it is a software problem (not hardware)
After i uninstalled (remove programs) both I-tunes and Quicktime, and deleted their folders in Program files, i noticed the Quicktime icon was still in the Control Panel. If you click it, it will indicate some Quicktime files still buried in C/WINDOWS/System32.......about five "Quicktimetype" files (eg, quicktime dll. etc) So this suggests the Windows uninstaller is simply not removing all the files like it should, which is neccessary before a reinstall of Quicktime can succeed. This may contradict the buggy Apple software theory...( I'm a big Mac fan because Apple is KNOWN for it's rocksolid stable software..... Quicktime NEVER crashed on me in OSX)
Anyway, back to XP PRO. When I tried to delete those five stubborn files, they would not budge! So I enlisted a useful utility called DrDelete(download the demo) It removed four of the files immediately, and it told me it would remove the fifth on a reboot.
Upon rebooting, I emptied the trash, and checked to see if the Quicktime icon in the control panel was still there...it was now gone. I then installed the standalone version of Quicktime FIRST, to be on the safe side (though the complete Itunes/Quicktime package may have worked at this point?) Anyway, Quicktime now worked perfectly!
Then, SECOND, I installed the Itunes/Quicktime installer and held my breath......Eureka!!!! It worked like a charm.
(PS; I do not believe the virus protection turned off has anything to do with this problem....It took me over an hour to track those stubborn files!
