HELP! cannot access files! please!

I am new to this forum so hopefully i posted in the right thread . i am also not totally familiar with computer terms so please try to keep things simple.

i have a long story so i would extremly appreiciate it if ANYONE can help out because windows XP is giving me the hardest time ever.

I built my own computer during the summer:
Asus a8n sli deluxe
WD raptor 74 gb 10k RPM hardrive
1gb pc4000 crucial ballistix ram
true 550 psu
new castle 3800+

this computer has been working like a dream ever since recently. I believe i got a virus, but i am not sure if i did. what happens is, whenever i totally turn my computer off, and i goto try to turn it back on, it will not boot up. everything will run fine, the fans are all going, i hear the hardrive spinning, but the moniter is black and no show. also, that one beep you hear after turning on the computer is not there either. its just total silence with the fans going.

this has been a problem for about a month but i would simply just turn off my computer and back on and keep doing that until it booted up and worked fine.

today, i tried doing that for more than 4 hours and nothign was happeneing. so then i borrowed my friends 160 gb hardrive that had just windows installed on it and loaded the 10k rpm hardrive under slave. i was planning on just copying/moving files onto the borrowed hardrive and just formatting and reinstalling windows. unfortunately, im a guy who saves everything on the desktop with many subfolders. i was trying to access the documents and settings, my user name, but it says access is denied. all of my college papers and research work was on that and i NEED it for a paper i have been working on for over a month.

my friend suggested running windows repair installation which basically uninstalls the windows folder and creates new one. i did that but same problem occured. i could not access the folder with my user name on it.

i then did windows repair in DOS mode. my friend was showing a way on how u can copy files from one hardrive to another using several commands. I have several hundreds of files so this way would take a lifetime to copy each file over. he told me i can set the wildcards to true but that method was denied.

on top of all this, i also have hardware problems. My crucial ballistix ram does not allow my computer to boot up. (problem stated above, i had to borrow my friends 512 stick in order for it to work). i foudn this very strange. my stick of ram all of a sudden stopped working and did not allow my comptuer to boot up.

If anybody knows any way i can copy or access the files through windows in a faster manner, PLEASE help. also, if anyone knows how i can resolve the problem of my stick of ram, that would be extremly appreciated too.

thanks for all the help~

Follow the instructions in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP to regain access to your files.

As for the RAM problem...RAM modules do go bad so it looks like buying another module is your only option.
