No Sound

I know that there is already a thread on this, i've read it tried the advice that seems applicanle but have got no where fast. Im getting the standard "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly." message. Using the sound and audio device profile all of the options are greyed out/unavialble. Also my device hardware box is completely blank.

All this happened after my computer crashed last night and on re-booting I had to register my Windows XP software activation. I did try using my system restore to before the problem but no luck.

Everything else is working fine.

Thank you in advance.

Set a System Restore Point before installing the drivers just in case

Your board is an AsRock P4S61

Go here http://www.asrock.com/support/Download/dl_p4S61.htm

not sure where you got the C-Media driver, but this is the driver from the motherboard maker.

Just noticed you have a Win XP disc, try a System File Check Go to Run / type "sfc /scannow" ( without the quotes and note the space after sfc ) have your Win XP cd available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files.

If this fails you can do a Repair Install of XP, you won't lose any files or data look here on how to http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Do this first before installing any drivers .

Hope this helps

I've downloaded the P4S61 Driver Audio (the 20.2 MB one form http://www.asrock.com/support/Download/dl_p4S61.htm) when i unpack the file and run set up it only ever gets as far as 94% before freezing. I've tried it 10 times now.

I've run sfc /scannow and when it gets to the end it just closes itself with no kind of mesage. is this right?

Thank you very much for your help so far though!

I think the way to go is a Repair Install of XP, the fact you have no drivers listed Under sound and hardware, points to no Win Drivers installed, also being unable to install the driver could mean the Win Installer is also not installed. sfc does just close when completed this is normal.

Hope this helps

I've recently moved and I can't get hold of the CD for a while. Is there a solution, even a short term one that would I could do without it?

In the meantime, check the BIOS settings for the on-board sound. Make sure it's selected.

If performing a "repair" install of WinXP doesn't do it, the sound device hardware might have failed. I've seen this many times with C-Media on-board sound.
