Problem running games under XP!

Hi.
Ive just come back from the army to find the family computer reformatted with XP installed. Oh, well, all my mp3s, games etc are gone but XP looks neat. So i start installing my games again and plop.

This happends:
Atm i only have 2 games installed (Continuum/Subspace and Command & Conquer: Generals) but the error is the same for both. You start to run the game, you hear the sound from the intro and then the game goes black and minimizes. You dont get to see any graphic.

In my head it sounds like a graphicscard issue, i have a G4 ti4200 128mb. Tried to install the newest drivers i found (41.09 nVIDIA)
but nothing really happened.

I have Norton Antivirus installed, all sorts of Bookshelfcrap that my dad loves and my comp is a 2.2ghz, 512mbram with the graphiccard listed above.

Any help will be appreciated ! Thanks in advance =)

there are alot of games, even new ones, that do not like running on limited user accounts. if you are running in one of these, then try using an administrator account. some games like mechwarrior 4 will run if you right click the icon, and run as an administrator, but most times they like real administrator priveledges.

I would suggest that you try a few more games to see if they all have the same problems. Both both games respond in EXACTLY the same way?

Could be a videocard issue, in which case I would recommend trying the 30.82 drivers - for some people these are still the most stable.

Could also be a sound issue - so make sure your S/C drivers are all up to date

Basically, it could be a number of things....you'll have to go through a process of elimination to see whats whats......no easy task I'm afraid.

Seeing as its just happening in games it could also be a DirectX issue, so make sure you have DX9 on there, and re-install it if necessay. Also, shut down any TSR's and other radom crap that is running in the background - click on the icons in the system tray and shut them off - they will come back when you reboot.

I would disagree with the Direct X9 installation,it's causing more problems than it cures !
Check the box the games came in for operating system requirement. If it don't say XP try "rolling the drivers back" to '98

Command & Conquer

Since upgrading to Win XP, I too have been unable to play the 1995 version of Command & Conquer. I am relucant to throw this programme out, so can anyone help with a solution? C&C doesn't install. I get a DOS window open saying that it can't find SETUP.MIX file on CD.

Anyone seen this before?

Installing older drivers may be the trick. I had a problem on my laptop where I would get nothing but hangs, freezes, and lag with the latest video drivers, but after going to the next latest, all was fine.

DirectX 9c is the best version yet! I've never had any problems with it on computers new and old.

As for the original C&C, you're going to have to find a DOS emulator to play that since XP no longer supports DOS.
