shortcut icons flip out

with no apparent reason almost all the desk top shortcut icons and program icons have changed and become non functional. they appeard as a folder with a page with 6 unregognizable icons on it in front of the folder. when I double clicked on the one for windows media player i got a window that offered me the opportunity to repair by going online or to a list so i selected list and located wmp and clicked on it and then most of the icons turned it wmp icons. when i try to do anything, system restor, desktop properties, etc wmp opens and tells me that windows cannot open this ile. What gives? please help if you can.
