I can hear music from mp3/cds/movies, but everything else doesnt make a noise

I can hear my cds, mp3s, even music from movies. However things like MSN messenger dont make a sound, and my games make no noise either. When I go to audio options and click master volume where it normally makes a little beep noise to help me adjust my volume, I hear nothing. My pc is HERE
and I have an Nvidia Gforce FX 5500 128mb video card. Here is a screenie of my device manager under sound



I went to HP's site, and reinstalled the audio drivers but to no avail, same issue. Any ideas? thanks!

Look in Sounds & Audio [via Start/Control Panel] and under the Sounds tab and in the drop-down menu[for sound scheme] ensure the No sounds option hasn't been selected.

I believe that the no sounds option simply disables windows theme sounds, not game sounds and other third party program sounds.
Go to the same place mentioned in the above post, but go to the 'volume' tab. In the 'device volume' area you should see a button that says 'advanced...". Click that button, and make sure all the different types of sound are enabled and have the volume that you want.
