Networking - Win XP Pro

Hello All,

Hopefully someone can help me with this networking problem I have.

I have 2 Laptops working on a home network, both wireless, connecting through a Netgear ADSL/Router. Both are running XP Pro SP2, One has ZA firwall the other McAfee. Both are on the same workgroup.

My problem is that both PC's can see each other, but the cannot share or talk to each other, file sharing is on on both and I have set the firewalls to allow the local IP addresses.

I continue to get \\Computer not accessable blah blah blah...Network path not found. I can't ping or net view either PC either.

It's doing my head in, all I want to do is share some files and sync my email over the network and it's just becoming a real mssion. I thought XP Pro was meant to make networking EASY??

Any help greatly appreciated

Magellan

Have you marked any files, folders or drives on either computer as shared?

Drag the file, folder or drive you want to share into the "Shared Documents" folder. It does not move the item into that folder, it puts a shortcut to the item in the Share Documents folder.

Presumably you have run the Network setup wizard, I have had occasion where manually enabling file sharing hasn't worked, but running the wizard has worked for me.

You could also try disabling both firewalls to see if this is the problem, if you can share with them off, turn them on one at a time until you find the culprit.

Merry Xmas

Have tried all of the above. I do realise I have to share folders and know how too, so thats not the issue. Tried the network wizard as well, no joy there.

Starting to suspect this is a hardware thing. As I said I have two laptops connected wirelessly through a Netgear DG834G ADSL Modem/Router, both have access to the internet no problems. The problem seems to be on the LAN side. Both are in the same workgroup and have different names, but it's a real hit and miss affair as to if the two PC's can see each other, and even when they can, access is still denied. I have sets up Gropus on both PC's and shared folders allocating permissions to this Group, but still nothing.

The only thing I can think is I am using the automatic DHCP from the router. Am going to try disabling this and allocating each PC with a static IP address to see if this works.

Has anyone had similar issues with the DG834G?? If so, how did you get around it?

Cheers
