login password

Does anyone know how to get threw the login password you set up for your computer?I got a computer from a friend who had to go away for awhile,unexpectedly and he forgot to tell me his password to start up windows xp and theres no way of contacting him until he returns ,and thats not going to be for a couple years.Tried to reset it but had no luck and i can not do anything cause it starts up but stops and wants me to type in password that he set up .If anyone knows what i can do to figure out password or get it to where it will let me start up without it please let me know would really appreciate it thanks

Logon the main, usually hidden Administrator account where you can reset or remove passwords from other user accounts:

XP Home - the main Administrator login is available only in Safe Mode. Boot to Safe Mode, choose the Administrator account, hope it was not passworded and leave the password field blank, press the Enter key.

XP Pro - Press Ctrl/Alt/Del twice at the Wecome screen to bring up the Administrator logon. Proceed as above.

Once in the Administrator account, go to Control Panel>User Accounts, change the password or remove it entirely from the user account you want to logon to, reboot.
