Hi, I'm an idiot. Last night I uninstalled some software on my computer, today I now have no sound...
I've already tried a system restore, but it didn't work at all, regardless of any previous date I selected (because I guess I made the mistake of doing a disc cleanup after I uninstalled the software?). I also downloaded the suggested Dell drivers just now, and that hasn't help either. I have tried to uninstall the 'yellow' hardware through device manager, and then re-install through add hardware recognizing the new hardware...pretty much all the suggestions that I've seen in the other threads.
So I downloaded belarc, my report is below. What should I do now to try to restore sound...? Any and all suggestions are Greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Please note: I have a dual boot with Windows Vista and Windows XP. the sound works on Vista, but not XP. The Sound playback menu is all grayed out, and the device is enabled under the Windows audio service menu. Under the Device Manager, the Mass Stoarage Controller and PCI Device both have yellow question marks before them. I've also tried to install some SATA drivers, but at startup, I get an error message saying: "Silicon Image RAID controllers are NOT detected in the system. Please make sure that all controllers are installed and configured correctly." I've searched the sony website and it only has drivers for Windows Vista. Please help me find compatible drivers for XP. Thank you.

Hi, thanks for your help!
i downloaded the first suggested driver, but couldn't download the audio driver. When I went to the page, it said I would be given 4 options for the download & to select 'open' and go from there...once I clicked on the install button, there weren't 4 options, only one, to 'save", which I did, then I got this error message - The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be installed.

What am I doing wrong? Any other suggestions for a way to secure this needed audio driver?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Steve

I'm not familiar with dual boot, and this seems a common problem with Vista , have a word here, you will need to know the chipset of your comp, Everest will give more information http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml
copy and paste the Computer / Summary section

then post hre in Sound issues, a new site but good comp knowledge http://www.overclockeddoc.com/Forum/index.php

Try this way use the If no Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

It says that I have an Intel 82801GBM ICH7-M - High Definition Audio Controller.

Also, while running the program, it said that my chipset on my motherboard was incorrect. I have a Intel Calistoga i945GM/PM and I guess I downloaded a different version. I'll try downloading the correct chipset first.
