Manufacturer : Realtek
Product Name : Realtek AC'97 Audio

Maybe i will just go to my local Office Depot and find a new machine. This whole thing is really getting me down.

Go to Win Update - select Custom - see what they have for you to install, I can't remember, but did we try the Realtek driver from Realtek or only HP
did you use Restore Discs from HP, or download the drivers from HP

no audio device
I finally gave up. I bought a new computer, an HP Pavilion a6528P with sound that works. It was a painful decision, but the whole thing was driving me to distraction. The new machine has a 500gb hard drive and a 3062 mb of memory. It is running Windows Vista.
Thanks for all of your assistance. I felt better during the episode even though we weren't successful.

Ouch ! expensive, so go here and get all the drivers under the Original Drivers and save on a CD or DVD, keep in safe place, and make a note of what the drivers are

I found this thread through Google, so forgive me if I'm bumping something too old.
bookworm seems very knowledgeable when it comes to audio problems, so I figured I'd ask for help with a pretty bizarre issue.
Basically, around a week ago, the audio on my computer suddenly stopped, along with video playback becoming choppy. The kicker, though, is that there are absolutely no error messages anywhere and I didn't install or update anything. I just turned it on one day and the problem was there.
I'm running Windows XP SP2, sound card is a Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit.
I've tried pretty much every driver fix and tweak I could find. Checked the speakers, they work fine. Any ideas?
Also, my onboard audio is a CMI 9880L, MS-7058 ATX mainboard. I've tried downloading the drivers to switch to onboard audio to see if that fixes the issues, but every version I've found won't install (stalls at installing bus drivers).
