Speakers are fine and volumes aren't muted anywhere.
Checked motherboard for any signs of damage to inputs, appears to be good.

System Serial Number: AUD61804H7 AP620
Enclosure Type: Desktop

Processor a
3.07 gigahertz Intel Celeron
16 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Not hyper-threaded

Main Circuit Board b
Board: ECS Asterope 1.0
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 3.24 01/18/2007

this audio driver http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...duct=184520 5

This driver needs the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture to be installed for it to work –

Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager
System Devices / Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture should be installed

if not installed get here - install - then Restart your comp - then install realtek audio driver
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...=228&lang=e n

Set a System Restore Point before installing any drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Already is installed, because you cant even install the realtek driver without UAA because it comes up with error neededing UAA first. Have done all that.

It appears my drivers are installed and nothing seems wrong just no sound.

services.msc (windows audio) is enable and started
msinfo32 components shows my sound device in there
BIOS on-board audio has been enabled

pretty much everything I can think of has been done.

Yeah I have bookworm. I just done a full wipe and reinstall of windows just now.

I installed chipset drivers first, then Microsofts UAA then realtek driver (all from the HP website where my model is) I have real tek manager setting are set right no volumes are muted anywhere.

Sound devices are set correctly but still nothing..

Bit of a shot in the dark this, but my Realtek audio would not work because the ATI High Definition audio was installed, I had to Disable it for Realtek audio to work. This is what it shows

another thing to look at is the Microsoft Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator - see here

Well i solved it, it was a result of my front audio wires not plugged into the motherboard (I had changed cases a few times and this last time i couldnt be bothered hooking up F_AUDIO on my MB)

When my system failed and I had to reinstall windows I took all the clutter out of my case (including unplugging F_AUDIO wires on my MB) Thanks for your time.

No sound ... fixed

Just wanted to thank bookworm - picked up on a thread that advised replacing the (Dell ) intel chipset and then, after some other process that I can't recall, lettng XP reinstall everything. I didn't have PnP Enumerator and there was SM Bus Controller problem highlighted on Device Manager.

I think I caused the problem by trying to install an old webcam (Swann Versacam) that was probnably not supported by XP.

So joined up to issue thanks.
