No Audio Device

I own a Power Spec 6245 and I use Windows XP. Service Pack 2 has been installed.

Unfortunately, for the past several weeks I have been unable to hear any sounds. Checking ''Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices'' under the Control Panel indicates that there is ''No Audio Device.'' Yet, when I check the hardware tab it states that the ''C-Media AC 97 Audio Device'' is working properly. [I have driver version 5.12.1.44]

Checking other hardware reveals that all other devices (Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Devicess, and Media Control Devices) are also working properly.

I have tried the Windows XP trouble shooting menus without success.

Checking Windows Task Manager reveals that there is a ''soundman.exe'' file

I have gone to Power Spec's web page to download any updates, to include an update of my mother board but this does not resolve the problem. I have also gone to C-Media's web page, but when I try to download updates from that location I receive a ''Page unavailable'' response.

I do not have a spearate sound card installed. Checking the inside of the PC shows that the connections for speakers, etc., is wired to the motherboard.

I have checked the speakers and they operate fine on another PC, and trying different speakers on this system does not solve the problem.

I checked "integrated peripherals" under the BIOS and it says that the VIA 3058 AC 97 Audio is enabled.

I would be grateful for any advice that could be offered.

The motherboard is a Biostar M7VIZ go here to Bioster http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdownloads.asp?model=m7viz

your Audio device is CMI9739 you will find the driver here, version 5.12.1.0040

if after install you still have no sound then install the VIA 4 in 1 chipset driver, RESTART you comp and install the sound driver again.

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case

No Audio

Thank you Bookworm.

Would you please explain what you mean by "Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case," and how to go about doing that?

Once again, thanks.

Thank you Bookworm.

Your explanation re: system restore points helped to restore my audio. I simply followed the steps to restore my system to a date prior to the date when I first lost sound. Everything is now back to normal.

Thank you very much!

I'm also having this audio device problem. I recently moved to Holland where I bought a Compaq Presario to use at home. Problem was that it had a Dutch only version of XP Home, so I loaded a 2002 English version of XP that I had, but now I have no audio device. I have spoken to HP and they showed me how to download the AC97 driver for the built-in Realtek, but that did not work - there is still nothing in the device manager. Is there anything esle that I can try?
Here are my Belarc details:

Compaq Presario 061 ER035AA-ABH SR1729NL NL610 0nx0411RE101ASTER00
System Serial Number: CZD60200SJ
Enclosure Type: Desktop
Processor a Main Circuit Board b
Board: Hewleet-Packard Asterope 1.0
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 3.06 12/26/2005

Thanks!

Set a Sstem Restore Point before installing driver just in case

Go here to compac http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...lc=en&os=2 28

scroll to Operating System
Intel chipset Installation Utility / install then RESTART your comp
This tells the target system which Win INF files to load
Install the audio again

p.s look at this rom HP on checking sound problems and BIOS http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...dlc=en&lang=en

Hope this helps

Checked with HP the SR1729NL uses a ECS RC410-M motherboard and the Audio is ALC 882 or 883, this is not the AC'97 audio but the HD audio

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case

Then go here to Realtek http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20CODECs

download the (Excution file) save to Desktop, then double click to install

Hope this helps

I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem... I have a Dell E310 and it crashed the other day.. I uninstalled a program and it wouldn't work properly after that.. I had to reinstall windows XP, 2002 version, along with my modem and everything... I had to start from the beginning. I had Media Center, but I lost it and I don't have the CD for it... And my sound isn't working. It says that there is no sound device, even though there is and it was working perfectly fine before it crashed... I can't seem to figure out what to do. I've went to a few other sites and none of their suggestions worked.

What information do you need to help me?
