From my limited experience, you will encounter all kinds of problems using XP 64 in terms of drivers and some programs, just such as you described. There's a very limited number of device drivers out there for the 64 bit version. For instance, Palm Desktop won't work.
I won't go through a lengthy diatribe, I'll only suggest that you reinstall with the 32 bit version of XP. The 64 bit version was meant for power users that are trying to squeeze every last little bit of performance out of their machines (at least for now).
At this point in time, I think you'll lose a lot more with 64 than you'll gain.
