Printer/mouse not working when I unplug them and then replug them from Dell Laptop

Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop
Belkin Wirless mini optical mouse
Brother printer
Mocrosoft Win XP Professional Serv. Pk 2

I have a laptop that replaced my desktop so I could do work at home. After unplugging wireless mouse and printer and then coming back to work next day and replugging them both in they routinely but not every time do not work, either one or the other or both. Very frustrasting bec, I could have saved alot of money and gone with desktop...I am afraid to unplug from laptop for fear won't work. Have spoken with Dell "Tech" support and have installed reinstalled updated drivers , tapped my heels together 3 times...no dice. Any advice. Also on my desktop (Dell) at home (Win XP Home) there is an icon "safely remove hardware" but not on WIN XP Prof? Please help Thanks
