Exclamation windows xp error

I am using windows xp professional, and suddenly when i go to boot up my computer, it wont allow windows to run. I keep getting ths error: <windowsroot>system32 ntoskrnl.exe file not found.
Any idea what this means? Or what I can do to get back into windows? I have never had this problem before and i have had troubles formatting xp as well. Any information anyone can give me would be great,,
Thanks,

If you had trouble formatting and installing XP you could very well have a damaged hard drive. Have you tried safe mode? Or you could be infected with the Funlove virus. You can try copying the ntokrnl file from your install cd and repairing boot. Here is good info on repairing boot and copying files. If you do not have any success, try to "repair" from the install cd. You should also try to diagnose your hard drive with a tool from your hard drive manufacturer. Hopefully you are able to get back in to rescue data at least. Sorry, no good news.

well to explain something,

ntoskrnl is a part of the boot process that brings up that windows xp startup screen with the green moving bars at the lower center part of the screen. i say you just do a repair like bboy said. or i believe you can startup in safe mode and try something no no no never mind you cant. well just do a repair and that sould work. lol

I have had a faulty ntoskrnl.exe cause my computer to lock up a few times. The following has got me back in business. May help with other things.
I have put a folder on my C: drive (krnl), and copied a good ntoskrnl.exe to it.
Go to http://www.mirrors.org/archived_sof...iles/xpboot.exe
Download xpboot, put an empty Floppy Disk in drive and Click xpboot. Name it something you will remember. Start with the disk in the drive. It changes the letter on your CD drives, and shows you what they are on the first screen. Write them down so you remember. (Mine are R & S). (Enter) At A:\> prompt type, (space after copy, space after .exe).
copy C:\krnl\ntoskrnl.exe C:\windows\system32
(Enter)
If asked to overtype, type y, (Enter). Do Ctrl, Alt, Delete to Boot.
If you can get someone to Burn ntoskrnl.exe from Windows\system32 to a CD, put it in the drive and you can substitute your new CD drive letter for the first C:, and leave off krnl\.
Hope this helps someone. Sure helps me.
