Nvidia video problems, possibly SP2

This is my configuration:

Athlon 1.3gh processor
SiS730S motherboard
512 meg of RAM
Nvidia GeForce2 Titanium

It's an older system, but that's what I'm using. I built it about 4 years ago.

Here's my problem, I've started getting occasional BSOD's and the error report says it's my video driver. I've upgraded Nvidia video drivers for years and never had a problem.

When I downloaded the newest set of drivers, 81.98, and extracted them, I tried to run "Setup". I get the following error: "The Nvidia Setup program could not locate any drivers that are comptible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit." The only thing I've done to the system since the last upgrade is install Microsoft Updates, one of them being SP2.

And I did check the "Readme" and my card is specifically supported.

I Googled the error and every page I read said it was necessary to use a modified .inf file to include my card. I downloaded one and ran through setup again. This time the setup completed just like it normally would. On the subsequent reboot, I get an endless loop of BSOD -> instantaneous reboot -> BSOD -> instantaneous reboot, and so forth. I went to Safe Mode and reverted to the old driver. So now I'm running again, but I need some suggestions about what to do.

Oh, and the current driver I'm using is 56.73 dated 4/7/2004.

Thankx.

You might as well stick with an older driver. The major differences in the new drivers probable wont apply to your card anyway.

An excellent suggestion, and you are quite correct. I doubt anything substantial would change for my old card.

That brings me to another question, but probably not one appropriate for this forum. My apologies for that and if you'd prefer to IM, please do.

If I want to spend no more than $100 on a video upgrade, (preferably Nvidia, but whatever) what's a good choice? I'd like to avoid this particular problem again if possible.

I'm not really hip to the latest graphics cards on market. Plus I have no idea about dollars. If you make a new post in the hardware section, I'm sure someone else can help.
