Question Laptop mouse will not open files/exe with double click

I recently repaired a Dell laptop for a co-worker that was infected with over 50 viruses and even more spwyare/malware instances. It also appeared as if his mouse was going bad. Whenever I tried to double-click anything it would not open. I would have to right click and choose open from the menu. I checked all his mouse settings and confirmed they were right. To be sure I matched them to my settings. When I returned the laptop he reported the problem and said it hadn't happened before. We have tried several other optical/ball/wireless mice and they all do the same thing. Does anyone have ANY idea what would cause this?? I am baffled!! Thanks for any help you can provide.

Dell computers come standard will full xp installation cd's so you can perform a repair operation to fix any files that are damaged.

1. Insert installation media.
2. Press any key to boot from the cd when prompted.
3. Wait for the files to load, then press enter to install windows XP
4. Setup should find your existing installation and ask if you want to repair it, press the R key to repair.

After it's finished you'll need to update windows and make sure the virus scanner is working properly.
