Screen Resolution Problems in XP Dell C640

I have Win XP Professional installed on a Dell c-640 laptop. I tried changing the screen resolution from 1024x768 (maximum posted by Dell) to 1280x1024 through the properties screen and all this did was expand the screen to beyond the borders of my monitor. In order to "see" what is on the screen I have to move the cursor to the left/right/top/bottom of the screen to scroll to it.

My collegue has an identical laptop with XP SP2 and same VGA and is able to adjust the resolution to 1280X1024 and upto 1600X1200 without any scrolling.Both laptops have the identical Mobility Radeaon drivers installed too

Hi ... It should make your screen like that , I mean you did change the setting to a bigger screen , What I would do is check the refresh rate for your screen and see if they are the same , Also are these 2 laptops identical models ? I know with PC monitors there is adjustable settings on the monitor itself , I am not sure whether laptops have the samething , its been awhile since I mess around with one but you should see if it does and if it does ? Make changes there as well ....

The refresh rates are same and yes the laptops are identical. There are no settings on the LCD panel either. What can be causing this behavior?

Hi ... You might want to try dell forum , I would say its the best place to get tech support for your laptop or desktop comps
