remote desktop without ctrl-alt-del???

does anyone know if it is possible to connect to a computer using remote desktop, and when you disconnect, have the remote computer automatically log back on to the user who was logged on before making the remote desktop connection? or is there a way to make this happen manually?

to explain a little, the scenario is this:

i need to remotely administrate a computer, which is available for restricted use by staff, only using the mouse - there is no keyboard. when i have disconnected from the remote computer, it is left with the "press ctrl-alt-del" message, and no-one can use it. it is too far away to go down there every time, and that would defeat the purpose of using remote desktop anyway.

can i get around this?

A lot of remote access things have a key combo that emulates control alt delete, I think one I"ve used uses control+alt+end. Experiment around.

don't think that would help me - i have no problem connecting to, and disconnecting from, and reconnecting to the remote computer myself - the problem is that someone sitting in front of that computer can't use it, because they need to press ctrl-alt-del, but they can't because there is no keyboard at that computer. even if i emulated pressing ctrl-alt-del from my computer, i would still then have to break the remote desktop connection, leaving the computer asking for someone to log on.

i think i need some way to make it so that when i break the remote desktop connection, the remote computer automatically logs back on by itself.

either that, or i need an automated logon process, where if the computer remains at the "press ctrl-alt-del to log on" screen for a certain period of time, it will automatically log on with a certain user name and password.

Arrow remote access

I would use VNC. This remote control software has the ability to show the startup logon window as it is started as a service. You could login again as the normal user and close the session which only breaks the connection. A problem with these kind of tools is that everyone sitting at the screen can see what you do. If you don't want that just use it after you have disconnected the RDP session. visit www.realvnc.com for more information and download. There is also a free version which would work very well for what you have described.

Ctrl-alt-end would allow you to remotely reboot the computer. Like you said you could autologin after that.

reboot the computer remotely

Go to a command prompt by typing cmd into the run option on your start menu. At the command prompt enter the following command

shutdown ?
This will display a list of commands you can use to reboot the computer or shut it down entirely. For example:

shutdown -r will reboot the computer. Your username will still be visble but the user on site can replace it with their username and password to log on. This will restore the computer to the limited rights user account and eliminate your problem.
