Internet sharing with DSL, wireless router help

I've searched the forum and haven't found a case that has my same problem or symptom. I'm hoping its because its an easy problem to fix!

I've had one single desktop computer(1) connected to a Netgear WGR614 wireless router and DSL modem for some time, no problems.

I just got a wireless USB adapter for a second desktop computer(2) and trying to get it set up to connect to the internet, but with no luck.

I assigned an IP address to computer-2 one greater than the IP address of the computer-1. From computer-2 I can successfully ping the router and computer-1. From computer-2 I can bring up the routers webpage and login, just as I can from computer-1.

But I can't get to the internet from computer-2. I'm not sure what to do, but I'm hoping I'm just missing one simple step!? Do I have to configure the router specifically to "add" the computer-2? As I said, I can access the internet from computer-1 as I always have.

Or, do I need to setup some sort of internet connection sharing from computer-1 TO computer-2? I didn't think I needed to, since the router is handling that, but... If I do need to do that, can I get some help on how?

Thanks a lot,

Hi There,

I have Netgear WGR614 and it is really pain in the Ar$$$...anyways.... Did you try to add the MAC address of the computer 2 to the list on the router web management page as well......I don't think this is your solution but it doesn't hurt to try.

Cheers

No, I didn't. I will do that tonight and update the status when I get home.

Thanks for the response!

WGR614 should have a DHCP server - there is no need to assign anything manually.
Reset the router to defaults, load fresh firmware, reset again.
Set computers to obtain everything automatically.
If still lo luck, manually enter some known DNS servers values on the router.

When everything works, enable security features (WEP, WPA, etc.)

Generally, unless you HAVE TO be wireless (laptop, etc.), remain wired – safer, faster, less problems

Ok, thanks for the responses. I got it working!

It turned out to be a conflict with running the manufacture of the wireless device software AND the automatic WinXP software to configure it. I changed it to obtain everything automatically and I would notice after a reboot that the ipaddress was 192.168.1.4, the next address the router would assign. The router would see it as attached. But then just a few seconds later when I would do an ipconfig again, it would be something totally different.

I turned off WEP for the testing on the router and was trying to turn off WEB in the manufacturers software, but it would never apply the settings. So then I realized that WinXP was also trying to configure it. As soon as I shut down the manufacturers config running in the system tray, everything worked.

I forget the brand of USB wireless device, but its Frye's own brand that they sell at http://www.outpost.com (airnet I think?).

Anyway, problem fixed, thanks!

As a rule, never install ANY software that came with device you buy/add to a computer. Only IF Windows cannot recognize, and install it, carefully find and extract an appropriate driver (ONLY) from the media that came with the device, and install it.
