Yet another "no audio device" problem

I came to your website via Google and it seems you have solutions when all else fails. I just spent several hours on a chat with Hewlett-Packard without a resolution. In Control Panel, under Sounds..., it says "no audio device" and everything below it is "greyed out". In Device Manager there are no yellow !'s and under properties for everything under sounds it says that everyting is working properly. We tried uninstalling and reinstalling, updating the BIOS, and still no help. This is a new HP Pavilion a1140n. Unable to do system restore prior to time problem began---it says "no changes have been made to computer". I would just like to put everything back to the settings from the factory without erasing all the programs and data I have put on it. Can you help?

No Audio Device

Today this became my problem too. It seems I deinstalled the audio device I had initially by bad luck. Device manager lists the yellow! "Multimedia sound controller" but the system wouldn't find the right driver for it anymore, neither in drives cab, nor in WIN XP CD or on the web. HELP, I don't manage to get the device back.

Hi all,

You have said you would like to format the Pc so you get sound back?

that may work, but if there's no yellow ! in Device Manager, let me know what kind of card you all have, is it onboard? is it a Pci card?

If its on board, make sure its "Enabled" in bios, if its a Pci, re-seat the card, as there isn't any way to enable it in bios.
