Missing Taskbar & Icons

Hello All
A Friend has just called me for help with his pc
He tells me that he has no Taskbar or icons on his desktop.
I have just done a search on this problem and there seems to be a few people who have had this before but i couldn't find anyone who posted that they had fixed this problem and how.

I'm going to have a look tomorrow one sugestion i found during the search was

I downloaded a file enablediabledesktopicons.vbs file.

Anyone got a fix for this problem

Found this while searching I try tomorrow

If you have DSL or Cable, follow these instructions:

1. Ctrl+Alt+Delete>File>New Task (Run...)

2. Type: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/shellfix.reg

3. Click Ok and it will prompt to download shellfix.reg file

4. Click "Run" file. Do not save it on your desktop, or anywhere on the computer.

5. After it runs, reboot your computer and the problem will be gone

If you do not have DSL or Cable:

Follow these steps: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/shellfix.txt

The shellfix.txt repairs the corrupted explorer.exe

To anyone interested
Tried everything on the previous two posts with no good results.
That second post sounded so promising as when the pc started up it came up withan error relating to explorer.exe.

Luckly the pc involved was a compac
with a built in rescue F10
so we ran that and reinastalled or repaired the XP instalation.
and everythings fine now.and in doing that never lost any files / documents / pics, etc.
