Problem Assigning Drive Letter ( Creating A New Drive)

Hi, I have a big problem creating a new drive. I used to have 2 drives in my computer C: drive and D: drive and I lost D: after changing my OS. How to I create another drive like D: . I tried assigning a drive letter but Windows would grey the area ( not allow me to assign a new drive letter). What do I do??

My OS is Windows XP, and have 1 physical drive (by the way, thats the small box right?). Any other info about my computer needed??

If I read correctly you have XP installed on one partition on one drive and wish to create a second partition on the same physical drive, is that correct?

If so you have approached it rather back to front, you should have created the second partition when installing XP, to do so now you risk over writing XP files if you create a new partition.

Back up all your data, then reinstall XP, creating the second partition at the appropriate time during the install phase, I prefer to just create the XP partition during this phase and format the second partition from within Windows Disk management after XP is installed.

Which part do they allow you to create a second partition and how do I create another partition? Do I have to do the boot from disk steps again??

If you have one partition only with XP on it as I explained, you run the risk of overwriting important files if you partition it, you could try Partition Magic or similar programmes if you wish they can do it if you want to purchase software.....

If you decide to go the other route and recreate the partition then yes you will have to do the boot from disk steps again. Obviously you have some idea of the size of the partitions you want so create your XP partition as the size you desire it (during the format stage you will be asked to decide partition size, the alterable numerals will be highlighted, enter your prefered XP partition size there) and install XP.

Once XP is installed you can then partition the remainder of the drive from within windows via Disk management. Right click "My Computer" > select manage > then in the folder tree on the left side select disk management, right click on the unpartitioned space > select new partition then follow the wizard.
