Unhappy Windows Explorer Puzzle

I have XP Home with SP2. Up till now had very few problems (other than no sound after reformat). Now, sometimes when I click on a folder I get message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down" I click the option to send details of problem, but I'm really puzzled.

Could Zone Alarm Pro have something to do with this. AVG 7 and spyware scan reveals nothing.

1, get rid of AVG its not very strong in detecting viruses, better to get something such as Norton, or Mcafee, if you don't want to buy the anti virus software, download a programe called "Avast" this is free also but very strong in detecting viruses.

Download more spyware detection software:

Ad-Aware personel
Spy bot search and destroy etc

Does this happy straight after loading in to Windows?
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down

If yes, boot in to safe mode -
Disable non essential startup items in Msconfig

See some other post about Msconfig which I have detailed, this should help eliminate startup items causing this issue also.

Hi, I uninstalled ZA and AVG and installed Norton combined AV and firewall - so far, things seem to be OK -

Thanks

thanks Kev, help much appreciated. I figured that ZA had a lot to do with my problems - it was ultra keen to manage many program and application permissions - probably at too high a level than needed.
