Explorer.exe error when starting XP. Unable to load XP

I'm trying to figure out the problem with my girlfriend's mother's computer. Everytime you start the computer, even when in safe mode, an error comes up with explorer.exe and it won't load any further. I can only load safe mode w/ command prompt and I can only use command prompt and task manager. Here's the error code and infor the best I can tell.

Exception Information:

Code: 0xc0000005
Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000
Address: 0x0000000077e7c231

Can I just copy another version of the explorer.exe file from my Windows XP cd? I don't want to lose any of her programs or files. Oh, and when I try to run explorer.exe from Task Manager, I get the same error.

Insert the Windows install CD and boot to it. When it finds the existing Windows installation, do a Repair. That may fix your problem.

You don't want to do the Repair console, just a repair on the existing.

I am not sure how sfc /scannow will behave, but try it.

I believe I tried that as well. It went into the recovery console and asked which instance of Windows to restore. Only one instance of Windows came up. When it went to restore it, the same error came up.

When you are doing the repair install do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R." Just continue, and you will have the option to repair later on.

I did hit continue, then it asks me to select a partition and that stuff and all it does it tell me that if I continue the existing copy of windows will be overwritten. There is no repair option after the first one that showed up that I referred to in a previous post.
