Anti Virus

Hello,

Is there a better anti-virus out there than norton for XP Pro, free or pay? If so, can you post a link to get it?

Also, is there a better browser than IE?

Thank you

Anything is better than Norton .......

AVG Free is OK, small unobtrusive, can be set to update at specific times and days.

Browsers ....... Mozilla, Firefox or Opera ....... haven't used them myself but they seem to be the popular alternatives

Firefox is my personal choice of browsers and most of the IT people I know. There's still some sites that insist on IE, but they're becoming fewer.

If you're going to pay for an anti-virus program, I don't think there's much difference between Norton and McAfee; either will do the job for the time being. As for free, I'd probably go with AVG.

I'm giving Microsoft's OneCare a shot to see what happens, but I don't have a definite opinion of it yet.

Regardless of what you choose, I would still run AdAware, Spybot and Microsoft's new Defender to rid yourself of suck a$$ spyware.

Hi ... I would strongly choose one of the three anti virus program from the list below , they are pay version and are far better then norton or mcafee resource hog

( NOD32 , Kaspersky , BitDefender )

http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm

http://www.kaspersky.com/

http://www.bitdefender.com/

I wouldn't use Norton or McAfee even if it was given to me for free

I would strongly suggest using Firefox or Opera. Both about the same in security, just different User Interfaces. Just get away from IE. For Anti-Virus, e-Trust Antivirus is free and one year and its veerry good. I currently use it now.

Both McAfee and Norton are good, except for the fact they carry alot of your processes. Which slows down your computer majorly.

For Mal-ware i also suggest installing the new Windows Defender Beta 1, which only supports on Windows XP SP2. Very Recommended. And with SP2 you automatically get the Windows Firewall, with Windows Security Center.

And just for the running, if your also looking at a good Firewall, try the Outpost.

Very stable, free, simple fantastic.

I agree Avast is good, can be a pro version which I believe you have to pay (unless you can download a crack from somewhere)

IE is OK, can act up loads on my Pc, I have used Firefox which is great.

Very easy to use, Netscape/ Opera, not bad.

Hello,

Thank you all for the great information. You all have come through with flying colors in my book. Once again, this website does make a difference!!!

Question, when I decide which anti-virus to use, before I download and install it, should I remove Norton completely from my system? Or will that make me vulnerable to anything?

Thank you all again!

Hi ... Thats a big yes , You should always remove any anti-virus program if you are planning to using a different one , make should you do get rid of everything from norton first before installing the newest one ... What you can do is just download the other anti-virus program onto your computer but don't install it until you have remove Norton , then once norton is gone , reboot one more time and then install your new anti-virus program

this also might help to view http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=...virus+&spell=1

download the new AV, totally remove Norton, install the new AV, if you have problems uninstalling Norton (it does happen) there are removal tools on the Symantec website

Once again friends, Thank you so very much!!!

One more question please, I hope. After I remove Norton, and before I install the new AV, should I run Spybot, and Ad-Aware?

You can if you feel that you might have spywares but I would rather run those programs after you installed your new anti-virus program and its up to date , if I was you i would remove all temp files and cookies in safe mode , also have sysytem restore set to off before going into safe mode , then do your scans with all 3 apps

Small note: One at a time though, multiple scans running at once is not recommended
