Cannot Install Any Windows Media Player?

Iv had this problem for a while now and its really bad as when i want to view any video on the internet that requires windows media player it doesnt run at all, even with other programs installed.
The problem is this, whenever i go to install any media player up to the latest Windows Media Player 10 it brings up the message 'A later version of windows media player is already installed on your system, installation must stop' or somethin to the same effect.
The problem is that, i havnt got windows media player installed on my system at all and there seems to be no traces of it?
Can anyone help me solve the problem and get windows media player working on my computer. Im running on Windows XP SP2. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what Oldtimer is saying, but what is your browser, Internet Explorer?
To see if windows media player is installed on your system, go to add/remove programs under the control panel. Then, on the sidebar, choose 'add/remove windows components.' Towards the bottom of the list that pops up, you will see 'Windows Media Player.' If there is a check next to it, it is installed on your system. If there isn't a check, it is not installed. If it isn't installed, check the box next to it, and then hit 'Next.' I believe you will need your windows cd to install it.

If that doesn't fix it, can you view any video with windows media player, even if its not on the internet? Right click a media clip that you have saved somewhere, and choose "Open with->Choose program" and try to open it with windows media player.

Post your results on what happens, along with your browser type, and we can go from there.

One thing you might try, following Blazeix's instructions on the check box for Media Player, if it is checked, uncheck it and go through the uninstall procedure.

Then go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and see if it will allow you to download the newest version.

It's something else to try.

Actually OldTimer, your way doesn't work, at least not on my computer. I have wmp installed, and a search for WMPLAYER.A yields results called wmplayer.adm, which are windows policy templates. Those are not executable programs.

Wow people are so nice on here ^_^! If I said this on any other forum i probably would have just been called a noob lol. Ok so firstly I searched for any traces of Windows Media Player in the search and there was nothing (seached WMA, WMPLAYER etc) and Blazeix I am using internet explorer. Then what I then did was went to the add/remove windows components and firstly unchecked the windows media player box then clicked next with no problems, then checked it again and selected next and it seemed to install it as the shortcut became visible on my desktop. Then strangely when I go to double click on the shortcut for it the error on this link appears: http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/2954/wmperror1ws.png
Also before checking the box once more on the add/remove windows components bit, while windows media player was unchecked, I tried reinstalling Windows Media Player 10 once more and still got the error that is on this seperate link: http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2...terinstall.png
Thanks for all the help so far hope theres some way to fix it!

I think next I would try a registry cleaner of some sort. Norton makes a pretty good one, but there are others.

Go to www.download.com and do a search on registry. You should find plenty of choices that you can get with a free 30 day trial. Look at the number of downloads and the ratings, that should give you a clue.

I take it you don't have a "C:\program files\Windows medial player" folder or whatever your system equivalent is? Try using CCleaner's registry cleaner (its free). I've found it to be one of the better reg cleaners out there. If this regcleaner doesn't find anything, go in and do it manually.

1. Start -> Run -> Regedit
2. Delete the HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ Setup\Installed Versions\wmplayer.exe regkey
3. Try to open Windows Media Player via the shortcut, if that doesn't work, try to install again.

oldtimer, AlphaMei already said that he/she is using windows xp, and the search didn't yield any results!

PS: Where did you get the setup file, from a reliable source? Only download it from Microsoft's site, since there are a lot of viruses and trojans that masquerade as the windows media player setup file. Do a virus scan just in case!

what? Did you read AlphaMei's post, the one right after you posted your advice? He took your advice and it didnt work! You don't have to get mad, AlphaMei said that he searched and there was nothing! Read his second post. Furthermore, any computer error or corrupted program can be related to a virus. His error about "internal errors" could result from a corrupted file, so I was wondering if he got it from a reputable source (there are trojans that hide as windows media player.) The virus scan was only as an afterthought, my main advice is in the main part of my post.
