Acer Laptop Problems

Hi,
I've recently bought my daughter an Acer 5002 WLMi for her schoolwork. It's cheap and cheerful, but she is a bit too young for anything more capable (and more expensive).
We have two problems.
1. The 60GB HDD is partitioned, and uses FAT32.
My guess is that the best way round this would be to reformat to use NTFS, & reinstall XP into a single partition. Unfortunately Acer do not supply a Drivers Disc, only their "Recovery Discs".
2. Whenever the laptop is rebooted, even though we have reset it, the IE Home Page returns to a global Acer Website.
I would appreciate any suggestions or advice.

Hi hunter111uk,

There isn't anything that NTFS can do you that FAT32 can't, unless you want to have multiple profiles and secure them from one another, other wise, FAT32 is just as good as NTFS, but if you want you can change it to NTFS any time by using few command, go to RUN / type in CMD / [Enter] , on the prompt type in: convert C /FS:NTFS or "D", please remember that NTFS partition can Access FAT32 but Fat32 can't access NTFS partition.

In regards to IE home page....I would assume that Acer would do it through registry setting rather then simple IE home page options....take a look and the following link from MS...you need to change a module in the registry which is called "Main Page", that should fix the problem.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q320159

Here are the path to the"Main Page" Modules:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Cheers

Or just delete the IE sign up folder, reboot and should then work.

My Computer - All Programs - Internet Explorer - Sign up (Just delete the actual folder)
Restart after.
Might be some promotional softeware Acer installed on the machine.

FAT32 - NTFS
